Contraindications

This information is not intended to replace the advice of any medical professional and is not all-inclusive.  If you have any medical conditions, which may prevent you from practicing safely, please seek the advice of a medical professional before participating.

  • Remember...breathe. Sometimes when we feel challenged, we react by holding our breath, but this only increases the challenge by creating additional tension and stress.

  • Injury? Take the necessary time and precautions to recover safely. Modify your practice to protect your injury. This doesn't necessarily mean that you must stop practicing, depending on the extent of your injury.

  • Pregnant? Yoga can be an excellent part of your childbearing journey, with the approval of your medical provider. Pregnant women should avoid inversions, twists, and backbends. Anything that puts weight on your abdomen should be avoided during pregnancy. And, remember to avoid any postures or relaxation techniques which require you to lay flat on your back, beyond the first trimester.

  • Menstruating? Avoid inversions, strong backbends, and strong twists. (And it may be wise to hide the cookies, ice cream, and chocolate. Maybe.)

  • High blood pressure? Avoid inversions. Never hold the breath.
