How many times a week is yoga to be practiced and how many minutes should the exercise last?

  • I recommend a daily practice, if possible, of varying intensities. However, any amount of practice that you can fit into your schedule, is ideal. Try to aim for 3 times per week at 30-90 minutes per session, but don’t get discouraged if you don’t always have time for your practice. Remember that any amount is better than none, when we’re considering physical movement.

Why do you tell us not to hold the breath?

  • This answer is pretty simple. Holding the breath causes added stress and tension for the body.

Why is it important to never lock the elbows or knees?

  • Locking the elbow or knee joints causes hyperextension and applies excessive pressure. Besides, it takes additional effort and time to unlock those joints afterwards.

Is it really necessary to use a yoga mat?

  • Necessary...no. Useful...yes. I practiced without a yoga mat for years. I finally tried it and realized the usefulness immediately. The yoga mat is slightly cushioned and has a somewhat sticky surface that provides some grip to help prevent slipping.

Why is there no music playing during your videos?

  • As far as music goes, that's tricky with copyrights. And what if my choice of music doesn't suit everyone? I wouldn't want someone to forego practicing because of the music. I figure each individual can just play their own musical preference in the background.

Is yoga safe during pregnancy? Should I avoid certain movements while I'm pregnant?

  • Confirm with your health care provider. Yoga can be an excellent method to maintain your wellbeing during pregnancy. It can be a valuable part of such a wonderful experience. Yoga can help you to understand and appreciate your body as well as guiding you to have more awareness of yourself and your baby. Get confirmation that it's safe for you to practice yoga, then grab your mat and some water (and maybe a quick snack too).

  • There are some things to avoid during pregnancy though. Avoid inversions, twists, and backbends. Anything that puts weight on your abdomen should be avoided, as well as lying on your back beyond the first trimester.
